I’m Getting Old

I have become old, another self-proclaimed title I wear upon myself. To the average bear in the website development and design industry, I’m nearly as young as they get–called a newbie or youngin, two words that don’t actually exist in the English dictionary. I, however, feel ancient. Two days ago I turned the lovely age of 19, the awkward step between becoming an adult and being out of your teen years. I fondly refer to this age as “the one between 18 and 19″, mostly because I don’t feel 19. To me, 19 is scarily close to being out of your teen years–which can only mean taking on the responsibility of bills, groceries, and living expenses.
As for website design, I’ve learned some new tricks in the past few days. The most important trick any web designer, web developer, or website owner can learn is this: size 12px font does not suffice on the internet, even if it does on Microsoft Word. This is because, as fun as it is to squint, fonts that are tiny and illegible give me a headache. It’d be like actually watching a movie on that tiny little smart phone you have: just because it’s available doesn’t mean you should do it.
Another thing we all should know (and learn to love) is consistency. It’s something we’ve supposedly learned from Kindergarden on: make things match. That means that when you have curved edges in any aspect of your website, all other aspects should match that by also having curved edges. I fully admit to struggling with this one frequently.
